Binondo is a district in Manila, capital of the Philippines, and is referred to as "Chinatown". It is the oldest Chinatown in the world, established in 1594 by the Spaniards as a settlement for Catholic Chinese. It was positioned near Intramuros, the walled city, but across Pasig River so the Spaniards could keep a close eye on the migrants. Even before the Spanish colonial period, Binondo was already a hub of Chinese commerce. Even to this day, it is still the center of commerce and trade of Manila, where all types of business run by Filipino-Chinese thrive.
