Meteorological Terminal Air Reports (METARs) & Terminal Aerodrome Forecasts (TAFs) are VERY confusing, at first glance. Luckily, they’re not all that bad to decode, once you start to get a handle on them. Even easier once you know how to automatically decode them!

As commercial drone pilots we’re require to learn these text-based weather codes to pass the FAA Part 107 test. This is part of the long-standing history of the aviation industry. Whether you use these resources after the Part 107 test is up to you. While there are plenty of apps that give you this METAR & TAF data as a decoded graphic interface it’s good to know how to read these in the event the apps go down or you don’t have cell signal.

Bonus tip: METARs and TAFs can always be found online but airports will provide them to you, whether you call or listen to their weather frequency.

Let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, Good luck on your Part 107 Remote Pilot Exam!
